Since I got here the weather has been really nice in the seventies. When the weathermen said yesterday we'd have snow I was doubtful. This time yesterday it was 75 degrees. Now its 35 degrees outside. And to my surprise it actually snowed. Its starting to feel a lot like the holidays.
So Mikey and I eagerly watched the weather eagerly this morning to see if the snow would come. It was a chilly night. I went outside and could see my breath. My mom thought I was funny for enjoying the cold.
We didn't have much we needed to do today so we were pretty lazy. Eventually mom mentioned she needed to go to the grocery store for some food for tomorrow. That's where the real fun started...
We went to the grocery store to get some yams and other stuff. Her and I got salads for lunch and as mom was paying for the groceries she realized her house key was missing. She had her keys but part of them had broken and she'd lost her house key.
We checked the parking lot, the floor of the car, and the yard outside the house with no luck. The house key vanished without a trace. As we driving home it started snowing. The house was locked up tight with no key stashed under the doormat. Mom's husband was at work and not due home for a few hours. We didn't have much choice but to wait.
After the shock of being locked out wore out we were able to have a pretty good time sitting in the car. We ran the heater to stay warm and played with our cellphones and cameras. We didn't buy any forks and were forced to eat our lunch (salads) with measuring spoons. Mine was 1 tablespoon. LOL.
After being there for an hour I looked up and saw a deer in my mom's backyard. I've never seen a deer so close. She was just standing about forty feet away right in front of the car. My mom and I immediately grabbed our cameras and starting snapping pictures. Mikey was freaking out in the back of the car and I'm surprised he didn't scare her away. It was so exciting!!
After a few minutes a younger deer and an older buck with antlers appeared. We leaned out of the car snapping pictures as they walked around the back of the house. They new we were there but didn't seem scared. The doe made eye contact with me and just watched me take her photo.
As you can see by this point the snow was coming down in large flakes but not really accumulating. The deer ran around the house and crossed the street in front of the house. They were only there a few minutes.
A few minutes later I looked up again and saw another deer! This time a younger buck. The older one had ten points on his antlers this one only had about six. He seemed more brash and aggressive. He walked through the backyard and I got out of the car to get some pictures. I walked to the back and saw him on the edge of the yard. He made eye contact with me and we both froze. He was 15 feet away but I didn't even think about my camera. It was an electric moment were it was just he and I. It felt like he was sizing me up. Then all of a sudden he gave a loud grunt and turned away jumping high into the air.. He bounced away quickly across the street where the other deer had disappeared. I got a few pictures of him in mid air.
Mom's husband Don arrived home earlier than expected. He even brought Burger King. What a hero. We never found mom's keys. She has very bad luck with keys. But I feel immensely lucky that we got locked out. Otherwise we wouldn't have seen the deer. I really enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience.
