One of the things I enjoy is going for long hikes on the trails around Phoenix. There are a few great hikes in town and a lot that aren't too far away. I remember before I got Riley (dog) which was over a year ago going on a hike at South Mountain. I'd been looking for a dog and trying to decide on size and breed. As I was walking there was a couple with a golden retriever coming towards me. The dog and I made eye contact and it made me smile. It was the outgoing-ness and friendly look in his eyes. And I noticed as we passed he kept eye contact. I watched as they kept walking and the dog turned around two or three times to see if I was still walking away.
I wouldn't say that's when I decided to get a golden retriever. But it was when I realized the great personality the breed possesses. I got Riley a month or two later on the Fourth of July.
I mention this story because Riley and I have been going out on that trail the past two weekends. He's never been on walks this long before. We've been going about six and a half miles total. Its a great workout.
